Do I need a website if I have Instagram? A guide for local businesses

By Riri Web Design

If your Instagram is busy, your DMs are full and your regulars keep coming back, it is fair to ask: why would you need a website at all? It is a question we hear from barbers, nail techs, bakers, food trucks and cleaners all the time. The honest answer is that Instagram is excellent at some jobs and simply not built for others. Here is how to think about it.

What Instagram does really well

Let's give Instagram its credit. For a local business it is one of the best tools there is for:

  • Showing your work. Fresh cuts, new sets, plated dishes, before and after cleans. Visual businesses shine there.
  • Personality. Stories and reels let people meet you before they ever walk in.
  • Staying top of mind. Followers see you regularly, which keeps regulars coming back.
  • Quick conversations. DMs make it easy for people to reach out.

If you are doing all of that, keep going. A website does not replace your Instagram. It does the jobs Instagram can't.

What Instagram can't do for you

1. It doesn't help much on Google

When someone searches “nail salon near me” or “house cleaning in Tampa,” Google mostly shows business listings and websites. Your Instagram posts rarely show up for those searches. Your Google Business Profile has a spot for your website, and a real site gives Google more to understand about what you do and where you work.

2. Important information gets buried

Your prices, hours, service area and booking policy might be in a highlight, a caption from last spring or a pinned post. New customers have to dig. On a website, that information sits right on the page, in the same place every time.

3. You don't own it

Your account lives on someone else's platform, under their rules. Accounts get hacked or locked, reach goes up and down when the app changes, and you can't control who sees your posts. Your website and your domain name belong to you, and they keep working no matter what happens to any one app.

4. Not everyone uses Instagram

Some of your best potential customers don't have an account, or don't want to log in just to see your prices. A website opens in any browser, on any phone, with no app and no login.

5. It's harder to look established

For bigger jobs, like a kitchen remodel, a wedding cake or a monthly office cleaning contract, customers want to know you are a real, reliable business. A professional website with your services, real photos and clear contact info builds that trust fast.

When Instagram alone might be enough

We'll be honest: if you are just starting out, testing an idea, or you are fully booked through word of mouth and not trying to grow, Instagram on its own can work for a while. The moment you want new customers who don't already know you, especially customers searching on Google, a website starts to matter.

How to make Instagram and your website work together

The best setup is both, each doing its own job:

  • Put your website in your bio. Instagram lets you add links to your profile. Make your website the first one, so it is the home base for everything.
  • Use Instagram to show, your site to convert. Post the transformation on Instagram; send people to your site for prices, availability and booking.
  • Link your socials on your site. Visitors who want to see more of your work can jump to your Instagram, Facebook or Pinterest in one tap.
  • Add your site to your Google Business Profile. That connects your Google listing, your website and your socials, so customers find you wherever they search.
  • Answer common DMs on your site. If you get the same five questions every week, put the answers on your site and link to them.

What a simple local business website needs

You don't need a huge site. For most local businesses, one great page covers it:

  • Who you are and what makes you different
  • Your services and prices
  • Your hours, location or service area, with Google Maps
  • Photos of your real work
  • Tap-to-call, booking or contact buttons
  • Links to your Instagram and other socials

That is exactly what our Starter Site includes, from $1,000. If you want more pages, a blog and a booking button, our Glow Up starts at $2,500. We design a sample of your site first, so you see it before you pay anything.

The bottom line

Instagram is your storefront window: it gets people to stop and look. Your website is the store: it is where they find what they need and decide to buy. Most growing local businesses need both.
